The Roof Before
Here's what James's roof looked like before his roof replacement. Click through to see the transformation.
Before: Moss and Algae Growth
A closer look at the original three-tab shingles revealed significant organic growth, including roof algae (black staining), moss (green growth), and lichen (white spotting). These moisture-loving organisms thrive when debris and trapped moisture are present, accelerating shingle deterioration.
The Teardown Starts
The project began with a complete removal of the old shingles. Protective tarps were installed around the home to safeguard landscaping and ensure a clean, efficient worksite throughout the process.
The Sheathing Is Exposed
Beneath the shingles is the plywood roof sheathing, which serves as the structural foundation of the roofing system. The decking was carefully inspected for rot, mold, or decay, and any compromised sections were removed and replaced with new CDX plywood.
Seams Are Taped and Ice and Water Shield Is Installed
All plywood seams were sealed with all-weather deck tape to meet current building codes. Ice and water shield was installed along the eaves, valleys, and around all roof penetrations for critical leak protection.
Underlayment Is Installed
The remaining roof surface was covered with Velora One synthetic underlayment, providing a breathable, water-resistant barrier across the entire roofing system.
The Hot Box
Because this roof replacement was completed during winter conditions, shingles were stored in a heated "Hot Box" to keep them flexible and ensure proper sealing during cold-weather installation.
New Shingles Are Installed
For his new roof, James selected IKO Dynasty architectural shingles in Granite Black. These Impact 3-rated shingles deliver enhanced durability and are backed by our 50-year warranty, even as installation continued through snowy conditions.
The Roof After
After final detailing and a complete property cleanup, James's roof replacement was complete: delivering a clean, durable, and professionally finished result.
