Derby homeowner Jay, a returning Brown Roofing customer, reached out when it was time to replace the roof on his new home. The existing roof was over 20 years old, and leaks had begun forming around the dormers: a common trouble spot, especially on Cape Cod–style homes. Inspector Mat evaluated the roof and recommended a full replacement, along with a code-compliant solution for the low-slope rear section.
Project Manager Connor and his crew removed the aging roofing materials and inspected the underlying structure, addressing any compromised areas to ensure a solid foundation. Ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment, and proper flashing were installed to create a durable, watertight system across the main roof.
Because of the home’s low-slope rear section, a specialized SBS roofing system was installed in black to provide reliable waterproofing where shingles are not suitable. The main roof was completed with IKO Dynasty architectural shingles in Atlantic Blue — a bold, eye-catching choice that adds standout curb appeal to the classic Cape design.
To finish the project, the team also repointed the chimney, restoring both its structural integrity and appearance. With upgraded materials, improved drainage, and detailed craftsmanship throughout, Jay’s Derby home now has a cohesive, high-performing roofing system that looks as good as it functions.

Underneath, they uncovered plank decking: a traditional style consisting of individual boards rather than modern sheet plywood. The crew carefully evaluated the condition of each plank and replaced any damaged ones with properly cut and fitted CDX plywood, ensuring a strong and stable foundation for the new roof.
Once the decking was secured, they installed six feet of ice and water shield at the eaves, taped all plywood seams to meet building code requirements, and then covered the entire surface with durable Velora One synthetic underlayment. Next, drip edge and rake metal flashing were installed along all roof edges for added protection.
For the shingles, Joe selected IKO Dynasty in the timeless shade of Shadow Brown, a choice that delivers both exceptional performance and curb appeal, backed by a 50-year warranty. The crew finished off the project by installing a ridge vent to promote healthy attic ventilation and applying new flashing around the chimney to protect against water intrusion.
