Before: Moss and Lichen Growth
A closer inspection shows heavy moss and lichen growth covering their outdated three-tab shingles. Years of moisture and debris have taken a toll, and it's time for an upgrade.

Before: Old Siding
Along with the roof replacement, Lawrence and Brenda wanted this section of siding refreshed and their low-sloping roof rebuilt. Low slopes can't use shingles under current codes, so a special SBS membrane is required for lasting protection.

The Teardown Begins
The crew began by carefully stripping off the old shingles and removing the flat roof system, exposing the plywood foundation beneath, which is known as the sheathing.

Down to the Rafters
Damaged sections of sheathing, such as those with rot, mold, or decay, were removed and replaced with strong new CDX plywood. On the flat section, the crew replaced all of the sheathing, stripping it down to the rafters.

New Plywood Is Installed
Each new sheet of plywood was numbered for tracking, allowing the crew to give the homeowners a clear record of exactly how many were installed.

SBS Roof Base Is Installed
The first layer of the Elastoflex SBS system is the base layer, an essential step in building a durable, watertight low-slope roof.

New Shingles Are Installed
With the prep complete, it was time for new shingles! Lawrence and Brenda chose IKO Dynasty shingles in the sleek shade of Granite Black. These Class 3 Impact-Resistant architectural shingles not only look great but are also backed by Brown Roofing's 50-year warranty.

New Flashing Is Installed on the Chimney
Flashing was installed where the chimney meets the roof. This is a thin but vital metal barrier that prevents water infiltration at this vulnerable junction.

Ridge Vent Is Installed
A ridge vent was added along the peak of the roof, allowing hot, humid air to escape from the attic to reduce condensation and improve ventilation.

New Siding Is Installed
The crew also installed new siding in the section that needed replacing, carefully matching it to the rest of the home for a seamless finish.

Finished and Fantastic
With the siding complete and the SBS system capped, the upgrades were coming together beautifully.
