Before: Aerial View of Back
Here's a look at the back of Kevin and Marcella's house. You can really see the moisture damage from this angle: those black streaks are roof algae, and the white sports are lichen. Both are invasive, moisture-loving and shingle-deteriorating plants that need to go! Let's get started on that new roof!

Old Shingles Are Removed
The crew starts things off by carefully stripping all of the old shingles off of the roof. Before the teardown officially starts, the crew hangs up large tarps around the edges of the roof to catch the falling debris. This makes for a very efficient cleanup process and also fully protects the homeowner's property from potential damage.

The Sheathing Is Examined
Underneath the old shingles is a layer of plywood called the sheathing. This is the structural foundation of the roof, and as such, needs to be in tip-top condition before the new shingles can be installed. So, the crew closely inspects the entire surface for any evidence of damage, such as rot or mold, and removes those affected areas.

New Plywood Is Installed
Durable new 1/2" CDX plywood replaces the removed sections and is securely nailed into place, ensuring a solid base. Each sheet used is numbered for easy tracking so that the crew can accurately report back to the homeowner on exactly how many new sheets were used in the project.

Underlayment Is Installed
Now it's time for the underlayment. This is a thin, waterproof membrane that protects the sheathing from potentially damaging elements like wind, rain, snow, and hail.

Drip Edge Flashing Is Installed
A thin metal barrier called drip edge flashing is installed around the edges of the roof to ensure a watertight seal, directing water away from the sheathing and into the gutters. Now we're ready to install the new shingles!
