Before: Back View
This view of the back of Christopher's roof shows some more clear evidence of shingles that have aged past their prime. Those dark stains are no doubt quite a bit of moisture damage. Let's get started on that new roof!
The Old Shingles Come Off
The crew starts things off by carefully tearing off all of the old shingles and underlayment. This reveals the layer of plywood underneath, which is called the sheathing.
The Sheathing Is Examined
The sheathing is the structural foundation of the roof, and as such, must be in healthy condition before the new shingles can be installed. Just as suspected, these highly stained areas of the roof have left behind moisture damage that has penetrated the sheathing. These sections as well as any other sections found with damage are removed.
New Plywood Is Installed
Durable new 1/2" CDX plywood replaces the removed sections, precisely cut to fit and securely nailed down into place to ensure a strong, solid base.
Seams Are Taped & Underlayment Is Installed
The seams of all of the plywood sheets are taped up with strong all-weather deck tape for added reinforcement. After that, a layer of underlayment is installed over the entire surface. This thin, water-resistant membrane protects the sheathing from harsh elements that could cause moisture damage, like rain, snow, and ice.
Drip Edge Flashing Is Installed
Drip edge flashing is installed around all of the sides of the roof. This thin metal barrier helps prevent water from seeping in through the edges of the roof, instead directing the moisture away from the fascia and into the gutters. With that in place, we're ready to install the new shingles!
The New Shingles Go On
For his new roof, Chris has selected the sleek shade of Dual Black from our IKO Cambridge collection. These beautiful architectural asphalt shingles are proudly backed by Brown Roofing's 25-year warranty.
New Skylights Are Installed
Christopher also had his six skylights replaced with modern new VELUX brand skylights! This crew member is working hard to secure strong flashing around the sides of the new window.
The Finishing Touches
With all of the new shingles and skylights in place, there are only a few finishing touches needed. The crew is about to get to work on installing a vent along the ridge of the roof to allow for proper airflow within the attic, and then they will top it off with a ridge cap for a seamless finish.
