Before: Moss & Lichen
The beautiful trees in Richard's backyard offer great shade-but they've also made his roof the perfect hangout for moisture, moss, lichen, and algae. Time to kick all that to the curb with a brand-new, heavyweight, water-resistant roof that's ready to handle it all!

The Teardown Begins
The crew starts things off my carefully tearing off all of the old shingles. Before that begins, large tarps are hung up around the edges of the roof to catch the falling debris-protecting the property and ensuring an efficient cleanup process.

The Sheathing Is Exposed
Underneath the old shingles is a layer of plywood called the sheathing. This is the structural foundation of the roof. As such, the sheathing must be in tip-top shape before the new shingles can be installed. The crew carefully inspects the entire sheathing for signs of damage, such as rot or mold.

Seams Are Taped & Underlayment Is Installed
The crew found that Richard's sheathing was in excellent health, and none of the plywood needed replacing! So, they moved onto the next step: taping up the seams of each sheet of plywood with all-weather deck tape, and then going over the entire surface with a thin layer of underlayment. This water-resistant membrane protects the sheathing from elements that could cause moisture damage like rain, snow, and ice.

New Shingles Are Installed
Now it's time to install the new shingles! To gorgeously complement his home, Richard selected the sleek shade of Summit Gray from our premium-laminated IKO Dynasty collection. These heavyweight, architectural shingles are proudly backed by our 50-year warranty.

Ridge Vent Is Installed
A shingle vent is installed along the ridges of the roof. This vent ensures proper airflow by allowing a way for hot, moist air that rises from the house to escape-preventing damaging condensation buildup.

New Flashing Is Installed on the Chimney
New flashing is installed on the sides of the chimney where it meets the roof. This thin metal barrier creates a watertight seal, preventing moisture from seeping into the junctions.
