Before: Existing Cedar Shake Garage Roof
The garage's existing roof featured traditional cedar shakes, which can develop wear and deterioration over time. Matt chose to replace the aging roofing materials with an updated asphalt shingle system while maintaining an attractive appearance suited to his historic property.
Beginning the Garage Roof Tear-Off
Protective tarps were positioned around the garage as the Brown Roofing crew began removing the existing roofing materials. These coverings help collect debris and protect the surrounding property throughout the tear-off process.
Removing Cedar Shakes and Exposing Skip Sheathing
As the old cedar shakes were removed, the spaced wooden boards beneath them became visible. Known as skip sheathing, this type of roof support was commonly used beneath wood roofing materials and needed to be covered with solid decking for the new asphalt shingle installation.
Installing New CDX Plywood Decking
The crew installed new CDX plywood sheets across the garage roof, creating a continuous, solid surface over the existing skip sheathing. This decking provides the stable foundation needed to properly support the new roofing system.
Tracking Plywood Installation
Each sheet of newly installed plywood was numbered to help document the amount of material used during the project. This tracking process supports accurate recordkeeping and helps provide homeowners with a clear accounting of the decking installation.
Sealing Decking Seams and Installing Ice and Water Shield
With the new decking in place, the crew taped the plywood seams and installed ice and water shield in designated vulnerable areas. These protective measures help reduce the risk of moisture intrusion beneath the finished roofing materials.
Applying Synthetic Underlayment
Synthetic underlayment was installed across the remaining roof decking to provide an additional protective barrier beneath the shingles. This layer helps shed moisture and supports the overall weather resistance of the new roofing system.
Installing IKO Dynasty Shingles in Weatherwood
The crew began installing IKO Dynasty architectural shingles in the color Weatherwood. Their dimensional appearance and warm, neutral tones provide an attractive update to the garage while delivering durable protection against the elements.
Installing Copper Valley Flashing
New copper flashing was installed in the roof valleys, where adjoining roof slopes direct water toward a common drainage path. Copper offers excellent durability and develops a distinctive patina over time, making it both a functional and visually appealing choice for this garage roof.
Installing Ridge Ventilation
Ridge ventilation was installed along the garage roof's peak to help warm, moisture-laden air escape from the space beneath the roof. When supported by adequate intake airflow, this ventilation helps manage heat and moisture buildup.
Completed Garage Roof: Rear View
From the rear of the garage, the completed IKO Dynasty roofing system showcases its clean lines and Weatherwood finish. The new shingles, copper valleys, and updated roofing components provide a refreshed appearance and lasting protection.
Completed Garage Roof: Front View
The front view highlights the garage's finished transformation from aging cedar shakes to a beautiful architectural shingle roof. With new plywood decking, protective underlayment, copper valleys, and ridge ventilation, the garage is ready to complement Matt's historic Southport property for years to come.
