A Look at the Original Roof
This aerial view shows Robin's Wallingford home before the roof replacement began. The original three-tab shingles, dating back to the home's construction in 1999, displayed widespread dark staining associated with algae growth. After more than two decades of exposure to the elements, the aging roofing system was ready for an update.
Algae and Lichen on the Aging Shingles
A closer look reveals dark algae streaks and patches of lichen across the existing shingles. These organisms commonly develop on older roofs, particularly in areas where moisture tends to linger. Along with the roof's other visible signs of deterioration, they contributed to its weathered appearance.
A Missing Shingle Exposes a Vulnerable Area
During the inspection, Austin identified a missing shingle on the existing three-tab roof. Missing shingles can leave the underlying roofing materials more vulnerable to wind-driven rain and moisture intrusion. This visible damage reinforced the need to replace the aging roofing system.
The Shed Roof Before Replacement
The property's shed also featured weathered three-tab shingles with noticeable staining and discoloration. Like the main house, this smaller structure was ready for a roofing upgrade. Replacing both roofs would create a consistent, refreshed appearance across the property.
Removing the Existing Roofing Materials
The crew begins tearing off the old shingles to prepare the home for its new roofing system. Large protective tarps are positioned around the work area to help collect debris and protect the surrounding property. Removing the old materials allows the crew to inspect the roof decking underneath.
Inspecting the Exposed Roof Decking
With the existing shingles removed, the plywood roof decking is exposed for inspection. This decking provides the structural foundation for the roofing materials installed above it. Fortunately, Robin's existing plywood remained in suitable condition, and no replacement sheets were needed.
Sealing the Decking and Adding Ice and Water Shield
The crew applies protective tape over the plywood seams and installs ice and water shield in designated areas of the roof. These materials help provide additional protection against moisture intrusion beneath the finished shingles. With the existing decking in good condition, the installation can proceed without plywood replacement.
Installing Underlayment and Roof Edge Protection
Synthetic underlayment is installed across the remaining roof surfaces to provide an additional protective layer beneath the shingles. The crew also installs drip edge and rake metal along the roof's edges to help manage water runoff and protect vulnerable perimeter areas. With these components in place, the roof is ready for its new shingles.
Installing IKO Dynasty Shingles in Granite Black
The crew begins installing IKO Dynasty architectural shingles in Granite Black. These dimensional shingles provide a significant visual upgrade from the home's original three-tab roofing. Their deep, neutral color gives Robin's home a crisp, updated appearance.
Giving the Shed a Matching New Roof
The shed receives the same careful roofing preparation and installation as the main house, including new IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black. Its cupola is temporarily removed to accommodate the roofing work and will be reinstalled once the roof is complete. Matching shingles help bring a cohesive appearance to both structures.
Installing Ridge Ventilation
The crew installs ridge ventilation along the peak of the roof to support airflow through the attic. When paired with adequate intake ventilation, a ridge vent helps release warm, moisture-laden air from the attic space. The ridge will be finished with matching cap shingles for a clean, protected appearance.
A Beautifully Finished Roof in Granite Black
Robin's completed roof showcases the rich color and dimensional appearance of IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black. The new roofing system replaces the weathered, algae-stained three-tab shingles with a clean, modern finish. The transformation brings renewed protection and a dramatic improvement in curb appeal to this Wallingford home.
A Fresh New Roof for the Shed
The shed's transformation is complete, featuring matching IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black and its original cupola back in place. The updated roof gives this smaller structure the same refreshed appearance as the main house. With both roofs finished, Robin's property enjoys a beautifully coordinated result.
