An Original Roof Ready for Replacement
Here's a look at Mark's roof before work began. Dating back to approximately 1985, the aging three-tab shingles had provided decades of service but were ready for replacement after Mark experienced multiple leaks inside the home.
Signs of Previous Roof Repairs
A closer look around the plumbing vent showed substantial amounts of roof cement from previous repairs. Additional roof cement was also visible nearby, providing further evidence that areas of the aging roof had required attention over the years.
Beginning the Tear-Off
The Brown Roofing crew began removing the old three-tab shingles to expose the roofing system beneath. Large protective tarps were positioned along the home and surrounding property to help protect exterior surfaces and collect debris throughout the tear-off.
Identifying Damaged Decking
As the existing roofing materials were removed, the underlying decking was exposed and carefully examined. Sections of deteriorated plywood were identified during the process and removed so they would not remain beneath the new roofing system.
Restoring the Roof Deck
New CDX plywood was installed wherever compromised decking had been removed. These repairs restored a strong, reliable surface to support the new roofing materials and provide a solid foundation for the completed roof.
Adding Waterproof Protection
With the necessary decking repairs complete, the plywood seams were taped and ice and water shield was installed in vulnerable areas of the roof. These materials provide an important secondary layer of protection beneath the finished shingles.

With the protective layers of the roofing system in place, the crew began installing IKO Dynasty shingles in Shadow Brown. The rich brown color brings a fresh new look to Mark's home while completing the transformation from the aging three-tab roof.
Updating the Combustion Vent
A new combustion vent was installed as part of the roofing project. Properly integrating the vent with the new roofing materials helps create a clean, weather-resistant transition through the roof.
Protecting the Plumbing Vent
A new Perma-Boot was installed around the plumbing vent to provide durable protection at this roof penetration. This finishing detail helps maintain a secure, weather-resistant seal around an area particularly vulnerable to water intrusion.
Improving Ridge Ventilation
Ridge ventilation was installed along the peak of the roof as the project neared completion. The ridge vent allows warm, humid attic air to escape while maintaining a clean, low-profile appearance along the roofline.
A Finished Roof From Above
From above, the completed roof shows the full scope of Mark's transformation. After decades beneath the original roofing system, the home now has refreshed shingles, updated roof penetrations, and improved ridge ventilation working together as a complete system.
A Fresh Start in Shadow Brown
The finished Shadow Brown roof gives Mark's Naugatuck home a dramatic update after approximately four decades beneath its original roofing system. From replacing deteriorated decking to updating ventilation and installing new IKO Dynasty shingles, Brown Roofing rebuilt the roof with protection and longevity in mind. Brown Won't Let You Down!
