An Aging Roof Ready for Replacement
Here is a look at Alana and Keith's Southbury home before the renovation began. With an aging roofing system and visible signs of wear, it was time to give their new home the protection of a complete roof replacement.
A Closer Look at the Wear
Up close, several signs of deterioration were visible, including granular loss across the shingles and rusted flashing around the chimney. The flashing where the roof meets the siding was also showing its age, reinforcing the need for a comprehensive replacement.
Removing the Old Roofing System
The Brown Roofing crew begins stripping away the existing shingles to expose the roof decking underneath. Removing the old materials gives our team access to the structural surface below so it can be carefully evaluated before the new roofing system is installed.
Inspecting the Existing Decking
Once exposed, the decking is thoroughly inspected for any areas that may need replacement. Some remnants of the old underlayment remain adhered to the plywood; because this material is firmly bonded and does not compromise the decking, it can safely remain beneath the new roofing system.
Water-Damaged Decking Uncovered
Here, a crew member holds a section of decking removed from the roof after significant water damage was discovered. Compromised wood like this cannot provide a reliable foundation for a new roof, making replacement an important part of the installation.
Installing Strong New CDX Plywood
New CDX plywood is installed wherever damaged decking was removed. This durable sheathing restores a strong, dependable foundation for the protective roofing materials that will follow.
Protecting Vulnerable Areas
With the decking prepared, the seams are taped and ice-and-water shield is installed along vulnerable areas such as the eaves and valleys. These additional layers of protection help defend the roof against moisture infiltration in areas particularly susceptible to water and ice.
Adding Synthetic Underlayment
Synthetic underlayment is installed across the remaining roof deck, creating another protective barrier beneath the shingles. With the preparation complete, this Southbury roof is ready for its new look!
Summit Gray Takes Shape
Alana and Keith selected IKO Dynasty shingles in Summit Gray for their new roof. The rich gray tone pairs beautifully with the home's dark blue siding, giving the exterior a crisp, updated appearance while providing lasting protection.
Clean, New Chimney Flashing
Fresh lead flashing creates a clean, durable seal around this chimney where it meets the roofing system. Properly installed flashing is essential for directing water away from these transitions and helping prevent moisture from entering the home.
Finishing With Ridge Ventilation
The crew installs the ridge vent along the roof's peak, helping warm, humid air escape from the attic. Proper ventilation helps manage heat and moisture buildup and supports the long-term performance of the roofing system.
A Fresh Start in Southbury
And here is the finished product! Alana and Keith's new Summit Gray roof looks fantastic against the dark blue siding and gives their newly purchased home the protection it needed. With the project complete, they can settle into their new home with one major exterior upgrade already checked off the list. Brown Won't Let You Down!
