Ready for a Roofing Upgrade
Here is a look at Daniel and Barbara's Wallingford home before the transformation began. The existing roof featured traditional three-tab shingles and, at an estimated 14-20 years old, was ready to be replaced with a more modern roofing system.
The Tear-Off Begins
Our crew began the project by carefully removing the existing shingles and roofing materials. Large protective tarps were positioned around the home to catch falling debris and help protect the siding, landscaping, and surrounding property throughout the tear-off.
Inspecting the Roof Deck
Once the old roofing materials were removed, the plywood decking underneath was fully exposed. The roof deck serves as the structural foundation of the roofing system, so our crew carefully inspected it for deterioration, moisture damage, or other areas requiring attention before moving forward.
A Solid Foundation
The existing plywood decking was found to be in good condition, allowing our crew to move directly into preparing the roof for its new protective materials. The seams between the plywood sheets were carefully taped in accordance with current installation requirements, followed by ice and water shield extending six feet up from the eaves for additional waterproof protection.
Installing Velora ONE Underlayment
Velora ONE synthetic underlayment was installed across the remaining exposed roof deck. This durable, water-resistant layer provides additional protection between the plywood decking and finished shingles while preparing the surface for the next stage of installation.
Preparing for the Shingles
With the protective layers in place, the roof perimeter and transition areas received their finishing components. Drip edge and rake metal were securely installed to help direct water away from the underlying decking and fascia, leaving the roof ready for its new shingles.
Installing Granite Black Shingles
Installation began on Daniel and Barbara's new IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black. The dimensional black shingles create a striking contrast against the home's white siding, giving the property a crisp and timeless updated appearance.
Protecting the Roof-to-Wall Transition
Where the lower roof meets the exterior wall, our crew installed step flashing along the roof-to-wall transition. These overlapping pieces of metal work together with the shingles to help channel water safely down the roof and away from this vulnerable intersection.
Step Flashing in Place
Here is a closer look at the completed step flashing before the surrounding siding is returned to place. Each piece is carefully positioned and overlapped to create continuous protection along the roof-to-wall connection.
Re-Flashing the Existing Skylights
Daniel and Barbara's existing skylights remained in place while our crew installed new flashing around them. Refreshing the flashing allows the skylights to be properly integrated with the new roofing system and helps maintain a watertight transition around each opening.
Completing the Skylight Details
With the new flashing and surrounding Granite Black shingles installed, the existing skylights are once again securely incorporated into the finished roof. The nearby combustion vent was also carefully integrated into the roofing system, creating a clean and professional finish around each roof penetration.
Flashing the Chimney
Our crew installed new flashing along the chimney where the masonry meets the surrounding roof. Properly installed chimney flashing is an important part of directing water away from this vulnerable transition and protecting the roofing system from moisture intrusion.
Improving Attic Ventilation
A new ridge vent was installed along the roof peak to provide an outlet for warm, humid air from the attic. Once completed with coordinating ridge cap shingles, this ventilation system becomes a subtle but important part of the finished roof.
