Here's a look at Peter's West Haven home before the roof replacement began. This full-property view shows the existing roof across the main home and its additional roof sections before the Brown Roofing team got to work.
Attic Inspection
Whenever accessible, our inspectors evaluate the attic as part of the roof inspection to get a closer look at what may be happening beneath the shingles. In Peter's attic, Geoffrey found visible water staining and organic growth on sections of the plywood decking, indicating previous moisture intrusion that would need to be addressed during the replacement.
Property Protection
Before tear-off begins, our crew takes steps to protect the home and surrounding property. Large tarps are carefully positioned around the work area to help shield the siding and landscaping while catching falling debris for a safer, more efficient cleanup.
The Tear-Off Begins
With the property protected, our crew begins removing the existing shingles and roofing materials. Stripping the roof down to the plywood decking gives the team full access to the underlying structure and allows any hidden damage to be identified.
Decking Inspection
Once exposed, the roof decking is carefully inspected for deterioration, rot, and signs of moisture damage. Any compromised plywood must be addressed before the new roofing system is installed to ensure it has a strong, dependable foundation.
Damaged Plywood Removed
Sections of compromised plywood identified during the inspection are cut out and removed. Removing damaged decking rather than simply covering it ensures that the new roof is installed over a sound structural surface.
New CDX Plywood
The removed sections are replaced with new CDX plywood, restoring a solid and uniform surface across the roof deck. This new decking provides a dependable foundation for the protective roofing materials and shingles that follow.
Numbered Sheets
Each replacement sheet of plywood is numbered as it is installed. This allows our team to accurately track the amount of decking replaced throughout the project and maintain clear documentation of the work completed.
Seam Tape + Ice & Water Shield
Next, the plywood seams are taped and ice and water shield is applied six feet up from the eaves and throughout the roof valleys. These vulnerable areas receive additional waterproofing protection to help defend the home against wind-driven rain, melting snow, and ice damming.
Granite Black
With the roof deck properly prepared and protected, installation of the new shingles begins. Peter selected IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black, a rich, dimensional color that gives the home a crisp and timeless finished appearance.
Day Two: Addition
As the project continued into its second day, our crew moved on to the roof over the home's addition. Just like the main roof, this section was carefully prepared with taped seams and ice and water shield before shingle installation began. Taking the time to properly prepare every individual roof section helps ensure consistent protection throughout the entire home.
Shingling the Addition
With the protective layers in place, the crew begins installing Granite Black shingles across the addition. Using the same roofing system throughout creates a seamless transition between the different sections of Peter's home.
Bay Window Roof
Even the smaller roof sections receive the same attention to detail. The completed bay window roof features matching Granite Black shingles, tying this architectural feature into the rest of Peter's newly updated exterior.
