Before the Transformation
Here is a look at Cheryl's Shelton home before work began. Her existing roof was approximately 25 years old and consisted of two layers of shingles. Rather than waiting for a leak or other roofing problem to develop, Cheryl decided it was time to replace the aging system proactively.
A Closer Look at the Existing Shingles
When conditions allow our inspectors to safely access a roof, getting up close provides an opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the condition of the existing materials. Geoffrey found aging three-tab shingles showing considerable wear, along with areas of moss and lichen growth. These visible signs of deterioration supported Cheryl's decision to replace the roof before leaks could begin.
Tear-Off Begins
With the property protected and preparations complete, our crew begins removing the existing roofing materials. Both layers of old shingles are carefully stripped away to expose the plywood roof deck underneath. Removing the existing materials gives the crew a clear view of the roof's structural foundation before the new system is installed.
Inspecting the Roof Deck
The plywood beneath the roofing materials is known as the roof decking, and it provides the structural foundation for the roofing system above it. Once the old shingles are removed, our crew carefully examines the exposed decking for rot, deterioration, and other signs of damage. Starting with a solid roof deck is essential before the new protective layers and shingles can be installed.
New CDX Plywood
Any sections of deteriorated plywood discovered during the decking inspection are removed and replaced. New CDX plywood provides a strong, stable surface for the new roofing system and replaces areas that can no longer provide adequate structural support. With the necessary repairs completed, the roof deck is ready for the next stage of installation.
Ice-and-Water Protection
Next, the plywood seams are taped and ice-and-water shield is installed along the lower portion of the roof. Extending six feet up from the eaves, this waterproof membrane provides additional protection in an area particularly vulnerable to wind-driven rain, snow, and ice damming. It serves as an important secondary defense beneath the finished shingles.
Preparing for Shingles
Synthetic underlayment is installed across the remaining exposed decking, creating a water-resistant protective layer beneath the shingles. New drip edge and rake metal are also installed around the roof perimeter to help properly direct water away from the roof deck and fascia. With these components in place, the roof is prepared for its new shingles.
Summit Gray Goes On
Now the transformation really begins to take shape! Our crew installs IKO Dynasty architectural shingles in Summit Gray, replacing the two layers of worn three-tab shingles that previously covered Cheryl's home. The dimensional shingles provide both durable protection and a fresh, updated appearance.
Protecting Roof Penetrations
These two new components serve different purposes but both require a secure, watertight installation where they penetrate the roofing system. The pipe boot seals around a plumbing vent, while the exhaust vent allows air from an interior ventilation system to exit through the roof. Properly flashing and sealing these areas helps prevent water from finding its way beneath the surrounding shingles.
The New Roof Is Complete
Cheryl's new roofing system is officially complete! The aging, double-layer three-tab roof has been replaced from the decking up and finished with beautiful IKO Dynasty shingles in Summit Gray. Most importantly, Cheryl was able to address her aging roof on her own terms rather than waiting for a leak to force the decision.
New Roof, New Gutters
One final upgrade completes the transformation: brand-new white 5K gutters. The new gutters pair beautifully with the Summit Gray roof while helping collect rainwater and direct it safely away from the home. After 40 years of ownership, Cheryl's home now has a refreshed exterior and dependable new roof and gutter systems ready to protect it for years to come.
