Protection from water is provided by synthetic underlayment and ice & water shield befor the shingles are secured to the decking
Staggered Shingles
Courses of shingles are staggered so the roof doesn't develop weak vertical lines where water and wind can sneak in.

Staggering helps improve wind resistance, distribute stress, create a cleaner finished look and protect the nail zones
