Your Roof's Hidden Weak Spots: The Areas Most Contractors Ignore

Wednesday, June 18th, 2025 by Evie Rozendaal

Some of the worst roof problems don’t start with a storm or a tree branch... they start with the little things. Missed details. Overlooked weak spots. Rushed repairs. When contractors don’t take the time to look closely, minor issues can snowball into full-blown disasters.

At Brown Roofing, we take a different approach. Here are the areas we never overlook, and why they matter so much to the long-term health of your roof!

Eaves: The Edge Where It All Begins
Ice-and-water shield and drip edge flashing are installed around the eaves of the roof.

The eaves — where the roof meets the gutters — are some of the most vulnerable spots on any roof. These lower edges are the first to freeze, the first to see water back up, and the first to rot if they’re not sealed correctly.

We protect the eaves with a full six feet of ice and water barrier, giving your roof the strength to withstand Connecticut winters. Many contractors don’t go this far. We do it every time.

Valleys: Where Water Wants to Go
Elegant copper valleys are installed on this Brown Roofing project.

Roof valleys are natural water highways. When it rains, all that water rushes down into these low points. That means any vulnerability here: poor underlayment, improper shingle overlap, bad flashing — is a fast track to a leak.

We take the time to flash valleys correctly and install shingles with care so that they shed water, not trap it.

Flashing: The Unsung Hero of Leak Prevention

Flashing is the metal barrier that seals the areas where your roof meets other structures, like chimneys, skylights, and dormers. It’s essential, but too often, it’s installed sloppily or not at all.

We always inspect and replace damaged flashing and use high-quality materials to ensure watertight protection. Our crews know that leaks often start at the flashing , so we don’t let flashing be an afterthought.

Why It Matters

When contractors skip over these critical areas, it’s not always out of malice. Sometimes they just don’t know what to look for. But at Brown Roofing, we’ve seen what happens when details are missed. That’s why we don’t cut corners.

Our Project Managers are trained to look closely at the whole roof system, from edge to ridge, and catch issues before they get worse. We believe that’s the difference between a short-term patch and a roof that truly lasts.
