Photo Album: Full Roof Replacement with Skylight Removal in Monroe, CT

They installed new sheathing where needed—including seamlessly covering a skylight the homeowner wanted removed—followed by protective underlayment and finished with stunning IKO Dynasty shingles. The Old Roof

The Old Shingles Are Removed

The crew starts things off by carefully stripping all of the old shingles off of the roof. This reveals the layer of plywood underneath, which is called the sheathing.

The Sheathing Is Examined

The sheathing is the structural foundation of the roof, and, as such, must be in tip-top condition before new shingles can be installed. The crew closely inspects the entire surface for any evidence of damage, such as rot or mold, and removes and replaces any affected areas.

Goodbye Skylight

Sturdy new 1/2" CDX plywood replaces damaged plywood; in addition, Susan chose to have one of her skylights removed. No problem! This heavyweight plywood will stand strong.

Underlayment Is Installed

Underlayment is installed over the entire surface of the sheathing. This is a thin, waterproof membrane that shields the wood from harsh elements like rain, wind, snow, and ice.

Drip Edge Is Installed

Drip edge flashing is installed around all of the edges of the roof. This thin metal barrier prevents water from seeping under the edges of the roof by channelling it away from the fascia and into the gutters. Now we are ready for the brand-new shingles!

New Shingles Are Installed

Ridge Vent Is Installed

A ridge vent is installed along the peaks of the roof to ensure adequate airflow. This vent allows hot, humid air rising from the house to escape, eliminating damaging condensation buildup.

New Flashing on the Chimney

New flashing is installed on the side of the chimney where it meets the roof. Like the drip edge flashing, this prevents water from seeping into the roof through an otherwise vulnerable junction.
