At Brown Roofing, we believe the best time to protect your home is before the storm is on the radar. A little preparation now can help prevent bigger problems later.

What to Do Before a Severe Weather Event

Before strong wind or heavy rain arrives, take time to look around your home from the ground. Do not climb on the roof. Check for missing, lifted, cracked, or curling shingles. Look for loose flashing around chimneys, skylights, walls, and vents. If something already looks worn, weak, or out of place, a storm can make it worse quickly.

Clean your gutters and downspouts so water can move away from your roof and foundation. Clogged gutters can force rainwater to back up under shingles, overflow near the home, or damage fascia and trim.

Trim back tree limbs that hang over the roof. During high winds, branches can scrape shingles, break gutters, damage siding, or fall onto the home.

Secure outdoor furniture, grills, decorations, trash cans, and anything else that could become wind-blown debris. Even small objects can cause damage when strong gusts pick them up.

Check your attic for signs of moisture, staining, mold, or daylight coming through the roof deck. These warning signs may point to an existing leak or vulnerable area.

Take photos of your roof, siding, gutters, windows, doors, chimney, and exterior before the storm. If damage occurs, these photos may help with insurance documentation.

Review your homeowners insurance policy and know what is covered before you need it. If you are concerned about flooding, check your flood coverage separately, since flood damage is often not included in a standard homeowners policy.

What to Do After the Storm

After the storm passes, safety comes first. Do not go outside until conditions are safe. Stay away from downed power lines, broken tree limbs, unstable structures, standing water, and damaged electrical areas.

Walk around your home from the ground and look for visible damage. Watch for missing shingles, lifted shingles, loose flashing, damaged ridge caps, bent gutters, detached downspouts, cracked siding, damaged fascia, chimney issues, or debris on the roof.

Check inside your home for water stains on ceilings, damp insulation, bubbling paint, musty odors, or active dripping. Even a small stain can be the first clue that water found its way in.

Do not climb onto the roof to inspect damage yourself. Wet shingles, hidden soft spots, and storm debris can make roofs extremely dangerous. Leave roof inspections and repairs to trained professionals with the proper equipment.

Document everything with photos and videos. If you see damage, take clear pictures from safe areas on the ground and keep notes on when you noticed the issue.

Call a trusted local roofing and exterior company before small storm damage turns into a larger problem. Wind-lifted shingles, compromised flashing, or clogged drainage areas may not always cause an immediate leak, but they can leave your home vulnerable during the next round of rain.

Be cautious of out-of-town storm chasers who appear after major weather events. Work with a reputable local company that understands Connecticut homes, Connecticut weather, and the importance of proper installation.
