Late Winter Storms in CT - Pay Attention to Your Gutters

Connecticut has been relatively snow-free for the majority of the winter thus far. Don’t sit back in your seats yet folks! The Farmers' Almanac has released its long-range 2021 winter forecast for Connecticut calling for "cold and snowy conditions in the North”with the possibility of a blizzard hitting the Northeast during the second week of February. According to this source the storm may bring up to 1-2 feet of snow to cities from Washington, D.C., all the way up to Boston, Massachusetts.

March may not be without snow either! A storm will track from the nation's midsection to central New England and bring a significant late-season snowfall to the north of its track. The Old Farmer's Almanac wasn’t  cutting Connecticut any slack, either. The stated that they foresee "sleets of sheet" throughout the season in the state, along with a higher than normal snowfall.

What does this mean? Don’t neglect your gutters! If you let your gutters clog, rainwater and melted snowcan overflow and seep into the ground, significantly weakening the foundation of your home. The snowfall can put stress on gutter systems even if you did a thorough cleaning and inspection of your gutters before the season. The weight of snowfall could wreak havoc on your gutter system. If you noticed some damage, now is the time to jump on it – yes, even during the winter months.

Why Gutter Maintenance is Important

Snow and ice, mixed with cold temperatures, can cause a buildup and ice damming. The weight of this clog can cause gutters to sag, fall out of alignment, or pull away from the home – all of which prevent proper gutter function and can damage your home even more. A small issue now can turn into a bigger issue throughout the winter. A little sagging from one storm can weaken the gutter system, making it susceptible to greater damage in the next storm. If left untreated, the gutters can fail, resulting in water seeping into your home through walls and your foundation, as well as damage to the roofing system, fascia, siding and landscaping. Faulty, clogged gutters are the catalyst behind roof damage, basement and foundation flooding, lawn erosion, underground plumbing issues, interior leaks and floods, and many other costly issues that require repair. Water damage accounts for millions of dollars worth of property damage per year. Wet basements and foundations decrease curb appeal, home value, and the indoor air quality in your home. Stop the issue at the source.
